A covenant,
not a contract.
A contract runs on conditions. If you fail your half, I am released from mine, and it can be torn up the moment it stops serving one of us. Marriage in the modern imagination has quietly slid into that category — which is exactly why modern marriages dissolve the instant they stop producing happiness.
A covenant runs on something else. It is a bond sworn before God, who stands over it as its witness and its guarantor. When a husband and wife keep faith through years of disappointment and sin, their faithfulness preaches. It says out loud to a watching world: this is what God is like, and this is how He keeps His word to sinners who do not deserve to be kept.
